Wakefield Tech Help

FAQ

The questions people ask before they ring

If yours is not here, ask it — we would rather answer a question than have you wondering.

What sort of problems do you help with?

Everyday technology in the home: Wi-Fi that keeps dropping, a smart TV that will not connect, a doorbell camera that has stopped sending notifications, a printer that has fallen out with the laptop, speakers that will not stay paired, or a garden office with barely any signal.

If it is plugged in at home and it is not behaving, it is worth asking.

Which areas do you cover?

Wakefield, Ossett, Horbury, Sandal, Walton, Crofton, Normanton, Stanley and Rothwell, plus nearby villages and areas.

If you are not sure whether you are in the area, just ask — it costs you nothing to check, and you will get a straight answer either way.

How much does a visit cost?

A home visit is £49, which covers up to 60 minutes. That includes working out what is actually wrong and putting it right if it is something straightforward that fits in the time.

If a job needs longer, it is £25 for each further 30 minutes — and we will always agree that with you first rather than letting a bill build up quietly.

Larger installation or networking jobs are quoted on their own instead, so you know the whole figure before we start.

How do I pay?

We take payment by Bank transfer or PayPal.

When can you come out?

Appointments available by arrangement — we work daytime, evenings and weekends, so you should not need to take a day off to get something sorted.

Tell us roughly when suits you and we will find a time that works.

What happens when you come out?

We start by looking at what is actually going wrong rather than guessing. Then we explain what we have found, in plain English, and what we would do about it.

Once the work is done we show you what changed and how to use it, so you are not left with something you are afraid to touch.

Do I need to know anything technical?

Not a thing. You do not need to know your router from your hub, and you will not be made to feel silly for asking.

Describing the problem the way you would to a neighbour is genuinely enough — "the internet keeps dropping in the back bedroom" tells us plenty.

Do you do the fitting as well, or just the setting up?

Both. We are happy to mount cameras and doorbells, drill the small holes that takes, run and clip Ethernet cable, and install access points, PoE cameras and NVR or CCTV systems.

What we do not do is mains electrical work, structural work, aerials and satellite dishes, or repairs inside appliances. If a job turns out to need one of those, we will say so and tell you what sort of trade you need.

Will I need to buy new equipment?

Often not. A great many problems are down to how things are set up or where they are placed, not to the equipment itself. We will not sell you equipment you do not need.

Where new hardware genuinely is the answer, you can either buy it yourself on our recommendation or we can source and supply it for you — whichever you prefer. Either way the cost is agreed with you before anything is bought.

What if it cannot be fixed?

Some things genuinely cannot be fixed as they stand — a broadband line that is not fast enough, or hardware that has reached the end of its life.

If that is where we end up, we will say so plainly and tell you what would actually solve it, rather than charging you to keep trying.

Do you help small businesses too?

Yes — Wi-Fi and networking, printers, CCTV, connectivity, and getting equipment set up or working again for a shop, office, salon or workshop.

We take these on as individual jobs rather than as an ongoing managed IT contract.

How do I get in touch?

WhatsApp is usually easiest: send a message describing what is going wrong and we will take it from there. You are just as welcome to ring or email if you would rather.

It helps to say roughly where you are, what is not working, and when it started.
